The World Memory Championships were founded by Tony Buzan and Raymond Keene OBE in 1991 and have been run annually ever since. World Memory Championships Ltd is the promoter of the event and owns the rights and intellectual property.

The World Memory Sports Council is the independent governing body of the mind sport of memory and regulates competitions worldwide.  Tony Buzan is President of the Council.

The WMSC is responsible for

•           Compiling the official world rankings of the sport
•           Setting the Millennium Standards
•           Setting the disciplines and rules
•           Maintaining a consistent standard of competition
•           Training and licensing official arbiters
•           Maintaining the integrity and ethics of the sport
•           Approving and licensing National Memory Sports Councils
•           Licensing official competitions and accepting the results
•           Providing the communications platform for the sport
